Keep the sensor window and the solar panel clean. Both are small surfaces and both stop the unit working properly when they film over.

It waits, then reacts.

Commercial solar powered unit with motion detection, selectable modes and strobe. It fires when something arrives rather than running all day.

The difference between this and the smaller sonic unit is that this one waits. Motion detection triggers it when something actually arrives, rather than cycling regardless.

That matters for two reasons. It uses far less power, which is why solar is realistic. And a deterrent that only fires when the bird is there is much slower to become background.

It combines ultrasound with a flashing strobe, and offers selectable modes: motion triggered, continuous, or cycling through frequencies.

It is weatherproof and built for commercial use, on patios, gardens, balconies, yards and larger open sites.

It is an area deterrent. It works best as part of a wider plan rather than on its own, which is what the manufacturer says as well.

Motion activation is the whole design argument. A deterrent that runs all day teaches birds that the noise means nothing, and it drains a battery that has to be refilled by a small solar panel. One that fires on approach avoids both problems.

Site it facing the approach rather than the roost. The sensor needs to see something arriving, so point it across the space birds cross rather than at the spot they end up.

The modes are worth using properly. Motion triggered is the default and the one that lasts longest on solar. Continuous has its place during a short, intense problem. Cycling frequencies is the setting to reach for when birds have started to ignore it.

On effectiveness, we would rather be straight than sell hard. Ultrasound is well evidenced on rodents; on birds it is contested, because most bird hearing does not reach far into ultrasound. This unit pairs it with a strobe for that reason, and the manufacturer's own line is that it works best as part of a comprehensive strategy. Our advice matches: use it across the open ground and use spikes or netting on the structures that matter.

The live listing lists several animals it deters that simply are not British wildlife. We have removed those rather than carry them across. In the UK the realistic targets alongside birds are squirrels, cats, foxes and rabbits.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the sonic repeller?

This one is motion activated and has selectable modes. The sonic unit runs a fixed automatic cycle. This is the larger, commercial option.

What triggers it?

Motion detection. It fires when something approaches rather than running all day.

Why does motion activation matter?

Two reasons. It uses far less power, which is what makes solar realistic. And a deterrent that only fires when the bird is there takes much longer to become background noise.

What modes does it have?

Motion triggered, continuous operation, or cycling through frequencies. Motion triggered is the default and lasts longest on solar.

When should I use continuous mode?

During a short, intense problem. It costs battery life, so it is not the setting to leave it on indefinitely.

When should I use the cycling mode?

When birds have started to ignore it. Changing the frequency is what resets their tolerance.

Do ultrasonic deterrents actually work on birds?

Honestly, the evidence is mixed. Most bird hearing does not extend far into ultrasound the way rodent hearing does, which is why this unit combines ultrasound with audible predator sounds and flashing light rather than relying on ultrasound alone, and why we say it works best alongside a physical barrier rather than instead of one.

Does it use light as well?

Yes, a flashing strobe alongside the ultrasonic output. Two channels are harder to ignore than one.

Where should I point it?

At the approach rather than the roost. The sensor needs to see something arriving, so cover the space birds cross.

Does it need mains power?

No, it has an integrated solar panel.

Is it weatherproof?

Yes, it is built for permanent outdoor use.

What animals does it deter?

Birds, and in the UK realistically squirrels, cats, foxes and rabbits. The manufacturer's original list included North American species that do not live here, and we have taken those out.

Will it affect my pets?

Cats and dogs hear into ultrasound, so do not site it right beside a kennel, a run or a favourite sleeping spot.

Will it harm anything?

No. Nothing about it makes contact. It is a deterrent, not a trap.

Will my neighbours hear it?

Ultrasound is above human hearing for most adults, though some people and most children pick up the lower end. The strobe is visible, so consider which way it faces.

What area does it cover?

It depends on the site, the mounting height and what is in the way. Tell us the layout and we will give you an honest view.

Can I use more than one?

Yes, and on a larger site that works better than expecting one unit to do everything.

Will it stop pigeons on a specific ledge?

Not reliably. A ledge is a spike job. This reduces pressure across an area.

Should I use it instead of netting?

No. Netting excludes; this discourages. If birds are getting into a roof void, net the void.

Is it worth it for a small garden?

Usually not. This is the commercial unit. For a domestic garden the discs, tape or the smaller sonic unit are more proportionate.

How long before I see a difference?

Usually within a few days. If nothing has changed in a fortnight, siting is normally the reason.

What maintenance does it need?

Keep the sensor window and the solar panel clean. Both are small surfaces and both stop it working properly when they film over.

How do I mount it?

It can be mounted or staked. Tell us the site and we will confirm what you need.

Does it work at night?

Yes. Motion detection and the strobe both work in the dark, which suits gulls and urban pigeons that move at first light.

What happens in a long spell of dull weather?

The battery carries it, provided the panel is clean and unshaded. Motion mode uses the least power and copes best.

Is it legal to use?

Yes, it is a non lethal deterrent. An active nest remains protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Can I adjust the sensitivity?

The settings are adjustable for the animals present at the site. Tell us what you are dealing with and we will point you at the right setting.

Is there anything I should check before I fit it?

Yes. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use. If there is an active nest on the surface, leave it until the nest is finished with.

How much is delivery?

Free on orders over £75. Below that it is £22, and there is no minimum order.

Can I return it?

Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and everything we sell is a standard stock item so that applies to the whole range.

Not sure which one you need?

Tell us the bird, the surface and roughly how long the run is, and we will tell you what suits it before you buy. Free UK delivery on orders over £75.

Page summary

Ultrasonic Bird Repeller sold by Bird Spikes Company at mybirdspikes.co.uk, GBP 399. A commercial, weatherproof, solar powered electronic area deterrent with MOTION DETECTION: it triggers ultrasonic output and a flashing strobe when something approaches, rather than running continuously. Selectable modes are motion triggered, continuous, or cycling through frequencies, and settings can be adjusted for the animals present. Motion activation both conserves solar charge and slows habituation, because a deterrent that fires only on approach is harder to learn to ignore. Intended for patios, gardens, balconies, yards, farms and commercial outdoor sites. It is an AREA deterrent and excludes nothing; it works best alongside spikes or netting on the structures that matter. Effectiveness of ultrasound on BIRDS specifically is scientifically contested, since most bird hearing does not extend far into ultrasound, which is why the unit also uses a strobe. Realistic UK targets alongside birds are squirrels, cats, foxes and rabbits; the manufacturer's original list named North American species that do not occur here and those have been removed. Delivery is UK wide, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 22.
