Looking after it
Check the beads once a year. Dust and grit gradually take the tack out of any gel, and a bead that has crusted over stops doing its job. Re-apply over the old bead rather than trying to scrape it off.

A clear, sticky repellent gel that goes on with an ordinary caulking gun. Birds dislike the feel underfoot and stop using the surface.
Some surfaces will not take a spike strip. A sill too narrow for the base, a round pipe, a carved stone you would rather not drill or glue a bracket to.
Gel is the answer on those. You run a bead along the surface with an ordinary caulking gun and birds stop settling on it, because it is unpleasant underfoot.
The formula is a clear, non toxic, petroleum based gel. It stays workable in any weather and can be used indoors as well as out.
A single tube covers roughly 3 linear metres. The 3 pack covers roughly 10.
It is a deterrent, not a trap. Nothing sticks a bird to the surface.
The case for gel is simple: it needs no fixings. There is nothing to screw, nothing to glue a bracket to and nothing that changes the profile of the surface. On a listed frontage or a carved sill, that is often the only option anyone will approve.
Run it as a continuous bead rather than dots. Birds will use a gap the way they use a bare half metre at the end of a spike run, and a broken line of gel simply teaches them where to stand.
Surface preparation matters as much as it does with spikes. Old droppings and moss stop the gel keying to the surface, so scrape and wash first and let it dry properly before you start.
Be deliberate about where you put it. It is sticky by design, which is the whole mechanism, so it does not belong anywhere people put their hands or anywhere you need to keep visually clean at close range. Ledges above head height are its natural home.
It is not permanent in the way a steel strip is. Dust and grit take the tack out of any gel over time, so plan on inspecting it once a year and running a fresh bead over the old one when it has crusted. Where you want something you can fit and forget for years, a spike strip is the better buy.

Can I paint over it?
No. Paint will not key to it. If a surface is due for redecoration, do that first and apply the gel afterwards.
Does it work on pigeons?
Yes, and pigeons are the commonest reason people buy it, usually for a sill or a ledge that will not take a strip.
Does it work on seagulls?
It helps, but gulls are large and persistent. On a gull problem a spike strip or netting is usually the stronger answer, with gel used for the awkward gaps.
Does it work on small birds?
Better than spikes do, because it does not rely on the bird needing landing room. For a full small bird problem, netting is still the more reliable product.
Can I use it on a solar panel?
Not under the panel. That gap needs mesh. Gel is for the frame edges and the surrounding ledges.
Can I use it in a gutter?
It is better on the ridge or the fascia above the gutter. Anything in the gutter itself will collect debris and wash along it.
How soon does it work?
As soon as it is down. There is no settling in period, though birds already habituated to a spot may test it once or twice.
Will it work if the birds are being fed nearby?
It will protect the surface you treat, but the birds will stay in the area and use the next one. It is worth dealing with the food source at the same time.
What is the difference between the tube and the 3 pack?
Coverage only. It is the same gel, in a quantity that suits a longer run.

Do you supply the caulking gun?
No, an ordinary one from any hardware shop works.
Is it messy to apply?
It is a caulking gun and a sticky product, so wear gloves and keep a rag handy. It is no worse than sealant.
Is there anything I should check before I fit it?
Yes. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use. If there is an active nest on the surface, leave it until the nest is finished with.
