The reason a fence attracts so much attention is that it is continuous. Anything that travels along it can get from one end of a garden to the other without touching the ground, which is exactly what a bird, a cat and a squirrel all want.
So think in sections rather than perimeters. Treat the stretch between the tree and the feeder, or the run outside the window where the birds line up, and you will usually spend a fraction of what treating a whole boundary would cost.
Timber fixing is the part people get wrong. Adhesive on a fence rail that swells and shrinks through a winter will let go. Screws or cable ties last, and both are easy on a rail.
It is worth being clear about what this product is not. There is a category of security spike designed to prevent people climbing, and there are real legal considerations around anything that could injure a trespasser. These are blunt bird and animal deterrent pins. We do not sell them as an anti-intruder measure and you should not fit them as one.
For cats specifically, the blunt moulded plastic strips are made for exactly that job and sit more comfortably on a fence top. Either will work; the plastic ones are the purpose made option.
