A nest in the gutter is a blocked gutter.
Lightweight strips for guttering and roof edges. Stop the nest and you stop the overflow, the damp patch and the ladder work.
The expensive part of a bird problem is rarely the mess. It is the blocked gutter, the overflow down the wall and the damp patch that follows.
A nest in a gutter does exactly that, and the same gutter gets used every year until something changes.
These strips sit along the gutter top, the fascia or the roof edge and remove the flat space a bird needs to build in.
They are lightweight, so they add nothing meaningful to guttering that is often already carrying more than it should.

Think about the economics for a moment, because this is the one product in the range where they are unusually clear. Clearing a blocked gutter on a two storey house means a ladder or a contractor, most likely every spring. A run of spikes is fitted once.
Placement is worth thinking about. Birds nest IN the gutter, and perch ON the roof edge above it. Which you treat depends on which behaviour you are seeing, so watch for a week before you order if you are not sure.

Why spike a gutter at all?
Because a nest in a gutter blocks it, and a blocked gutter overflows down the wall and causes damp. The mess is the visible part; the blockage is the expensive part.
Do I fit them in the gutter or on the roof edge?
It depends what you are seeing. Birds nest IN the gutter and perch ON the edge above it. Watch for a week if you are not sure.
Do I need to clear the gutter first?
Yes, always. Debris holds the strip off the surface so the adhesive never keys, and spiking a gutter that is already full achieves very little.
Will they add weight to my guttering?
No. They are light enough to make no meaningful difference, which matters on older plastic guttering.
Will they stop the gutter draining?
No. They sit along the top edge and do not obstruct the channel.
How many do I need?
Measure the run you want to protect, divide by 50 cm and round up. Most people treat the sections that face a tree or a flight path rather than the whole house.
There is a nest in my gutter now. What do I do?
Leave it. It is an offence to damage a nest in use under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Clear and fit once it is finished with, and they cannot rebuild there.
When is the best time to fit them?
Outside the nesting season, so the gutter is protected before the birds come back.
What do I fix them with?
On plastic guttering and fascia, exterior adhesive. On timber fascia, screws. Cable ties work on some brackets.
Can I fit them myself?
It is ladder work at roof height, so treat it accordingly. On a bungalow many people do; on a two storey house we would rather you used someone with the right access.
Will they damage the guttering?
Not if you use adhesive rather than drilling. On plastic guttering, adhesive is the usual method for that reason.
Can I cut them around a bracket?
Yes, tin snips, and short lengths are easier around brackets and downpipes.
Which birds nest in gutters?
Pigeons, starlings, gulls and, in a shallow gutter, smaller birds too.
Will they stop small birds nesting?
Less reliably. Small birds can settle between the pins. If sparrows or starlings are the problem, closing the space with netting or a repair is more certain.
Birds are getting under my soffit. Will spikes help?
No, that is a void rather than a surface. Netting or a physical repair is what closes it.
Do they rust?
No. Marine grade stainless pins on a polycarbonate base.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years because exposure varies so much.
Do they need maintenance?

Are they visible from the ground?
Barely. Along a gutter line they read as part of the roof detail.
Will they work on a flat roof edge?
On the edge, yes. If birds are nesting on the deck itself, netting over the area is the stronger answer.
Are they safe for pets?
Yes, blunt, and fitted well out of reach in any case.
Will they harm the birds?
No. It is a barrier. The bird finds nowhere to build and goes elsewhere.
Can I use them on a conservatory roof edge?
Yes, and adhesive is the sensible fixing there.
Do they work on moss and debris build-up?
They do not stop debris blowing in, only nesting. Nesting material is usually the bulk of a blockage though.
Is it cheaper than getting the gutter cleared?
Over a few years, generally yes, because clearing recurs and spikes are fitted once. That is the main reason people buy them.
Should I do the whole house?
Rarely necessary. Treat the sections that face trees or the birds' approach, and see how it goes.
What if they move to the next section?
Treat that section too. Usually only one or two parts of a roofline are attractive.
