Looking after it

Check the fixings on a timber fence after a wet winter. Timber moves far more than brick, and a strip on a fence top works loose sooner than one on a wall.

Stop the fence being a motorway.

Stainless steel strips for fence tops, posts and feeder poles. Humane, and aimed at the grey squirrel, not the red one.

Squirrels travel along things. A fence top, a wall, a branch, a cable. They take the same route every day, and it is usually the route rather than the destination you want to interrupt.

A spike strip along a fence top makes that route uncomfortable, so they find another way round, which often means going the long way and losing interest in your feeder or your shed.

Stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised base, sold per 50 cm with no minimum order, fitted with adhesive, screws or cable ties.

It is a deterrent, and blunt. It discourages climbing and walking, it does not injure anything.

One important note: this is aimed at the grey squirrel. Red squirrels are protected, and if you are in a red squirrel area you should take advice before fitting anything.

Squirrel Spikes | Squirrel Spike Strip | Squirrel Deterrent Spikes - Stainless Steel (per 50cm strip)

The thing to understand about squirrels is that they are following a road. A fence top is a raised, continuous, predator-free path, and it is how they get from the tree to your feeder, your shed roof or your loft. Interrupt the road and you often solve the problem without ever addressing the destination.

That means placement beats quantity. Treat the section they actually cross, usually the run between the tree and the thing they are after, rather than trying to spike an entire boundary.

On a bird feeder pole the same logic applies at a smaller scale. A collar of spikes below the feeder removes the climb. Squirrels are extraordinary jumpers though, so a pole sited within a couple of metres of a fence or a branch will still be reached, and moving the pole is often the better fix.

The legal point is genuinely important here. Grey squirrels are non-native and it is an offence to release one. Red squirrels are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and intentionally killing, injuring or disturbing one is an offence. This strip is a humane deterrent rather than anything that harms, but if you live in a red squirrel area, take local advice before you fit deterrents of any kind.

Timber moves. A strip on a brick wall stays put for years; the same strip on a fence rail will need its fixings checked after a wet winter, so use screws rather than adhesive alone where you can.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do squirrel spikes actually work?

Yes, when they are placed on the route rather than the destination. Squirrels follow the same raised path daily, and making that path uncomfortable is what changes their behaviour.

Where should I put them?

On the section they actually cross, usually the fence run between a tree and whatever they are heading for. Treating the whole boundary is rarely necessary.

Will they hurt the squirrels?

No. The pins are blunt. They are uncomfortable to walk on, which is the point, and they do not injure.

Are squirrels protected in the UK?

Red squirrels are, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and intentionally killing, injuring or disturbing one is an offence. Grey squirrels are non-native and may not be released. This is a humane deterrent, but in a red squirrel area take local advice first.

How do I know which squirrel I have?

Greys are larger and grey-brown; reds are smaller, russet, with ear tufts. Red populations in Britain are localised, so if you are in one of those areas you will usually know.

Can I use them on a bird feeder pole?

Yes, as a collar below the feeder to remove the climb. Bear in mind squirrels jump well, so a pole within a couple of metres of a fence or branch will still be reached.

They still reach my feeder. What now?

Move the pole. Two metres of clear air in every direction does more than any collar, because jumping is the route you have not blocked.

Can I use them on a fence top?

Yes, that is the main use. Use screws rather than adhesive alone, because timber moves more than brick.

Will they stop squirrels getting into my loft?

They can interrupt the route along a fence or a wall, but if squirrels are entering a roof, the entry point itself needs closing. That is a netting or a builder's job.

Do they work on rats or mice?

They are not designed for rodents at ground level and we would not sell them as a rat product.

Will they stop cats too?

On a fence top, often yes. The cat spikes are the blunt moulded version designed specifically for that.

Will they stop birds?

Yes, the same strips deter larger birds from perching on the fence line.

How many strips do I need?

Measure the section you want to interrupt, divide by 50 cm and round up. You usually need far less than you think, because you are breaking a route not fencing a perimeter.

What do I fix them with?

On timber, screws. On brick or stone, adhesive or screws. On a metal pole, cable ties work well.

Can I cut them to fit a post?

Yes, tin snips, and short lengths wrap a post or a pole neatly.

Will they damage my fence?

No more than any screw fixing. On a fence you would rather not drill, use exterior adhesive.

Do they rust?

The pins are marine grade stainless steel and the base is polycarbonate. Neither rusts.

Do they need maintenance?

Clear debris once or twice a year, and check the fixings on timber after a wet winter.

Are they visible?

Low profile and clear based. On a fence top most people do not notice them from a few metres away.

Are they safe for my dog?

Yes. They are blunt, and they are usually fitted well above a dog's reach anyway.

Are they safe for hedgehogs?

They go on raised runs, not at ground level, so hedgehogs are not affected. Never fit anything spiked at ground level for that reason.

Will squirrels just find another way?

Sometimes, and that is the honest answer. Watch where they go next and treat that too. Usually there are only one or two viable routes.

Is there a more humane option?

This is the humane option. It is a deterrent with blunt pins, as opposed to a trap or a poison, neither of which we sell.

Can I combine them with other deterrents?

Yes. Spikes on the routes, and moving feeders or bins so the destination is less attractive, works better than either alone.

Do they work in winter?

Yes, and winter is when pressure on feeders is highest, so it is a sensible time to fit them.

How quickly do they work?

Usually within days. Squirrels test a route, find it uncomfortable and take another.

Do you install them?

No, we supply only. A fence top is a straightforward DIY job.

How much is delivery?

Free on orders over £75. Below that it is £22, and there is no minimum order.

Can I return it if I ordered the wrong amount?

Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and everything we sell is a standard stock item so that applies to the whole range.

Who do I ask if my question is not here?

Page summary

Squirrel Spikes sold by Bird Spikes Company at mybirdspikes.co.uk. Marine grade stainless steel spike strips on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base, sold per 50 cm strip with no minimum order, fitted to fence tops and rails, posts, walls, shed roof edges and bird feeder poles. Squirrels travel along continuous raised routes, so the strip works by interrupting the ROUTE rather than protecting a destination; treating the section between the tree and the target is usually more effective than treating a whole boundary. On a feeder pole, a collar of spikes below the feeder removes the climb, though squirrels jump well and a pole within about two metres of a fence or branch will still be reached, so relocating the pole is often the better fix. The pins are blunt: it is a humane deterrent and does not injure. LEGAL POSITION: it is intended for GREY squirrels, which are non-native and may not be released. RED squirrels are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and intentionally killing, injuring or disturbing one is an offence, so anyone in a red squirrel area should take local advice before fitting deterrents. Timber fences move, so fixings on a fence rail need checking after a wet winter. Delivery is UK wide, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 22.
