This product is bought far more often outside Britain than in it, and we would rather explain why than sell you something you do not need.
Britain has three native snakes: the adder, the grass snake and the smooth snake. All three are protected by law, none is aggressive, and only the adder is venomous.
If you are in the UK and seeing a snake in the garden, it is almost always a grass snake, which is harmless and eats slugs and amphibians.
Where a barrier genuinely is wanted, this is a humane one: blunt moulded points along a threshold or wall base that a snake will not cross comfortably.
It cannot injure anything, which matters legally as well as ethically when every native British snake is a protected species.
Start with the honest position. In the United Kingdom snakes are not a household pest. There are three native species, all protected, and encounters are uncommon and almost always harmless. The grass snake, which is the one people usually see, is a beneficial garden animal.
The adder is Britain's only venomous snake. It is shy, it bites only when trodden on or handled, and bites are rare. It is also declining and protected. If you have adders on your land, the correct advice is to leave them alone and keep dogs on a lead in known areas, not to buy a barrier.
So this product is sold with a clear conscience only where a barrier is genuinely wanted: an outbuilding threshold, a doorway, a step edge you would rather nothing crossed. And in warmer countries, where the calculation is entirely different.
The legal point is not decorative. Intentionally killing or injuring any native British snake is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. A blunt deterrent surface is lawful; anything that harms is not, and that is why we sell only the blunt moulded version.
Practically, keep the run clear. A strip that disappears under long grass or leaf litter is a strip a snake will simply pass over, and vegetation against a threshold is usually the real reason anything is getting in.

I have adders on my land. What should I do?
Leave them alone, keep dogs on a lead in the areas you know they use, and take care where you put your hands in rough ground. A barrier is not the answer to adders.
Where would a barrier actually make sense?
A specific threshold: an outbuilding door, a step edge, a doorway you would rather nothing crossed.
Does it work outside the UK?
Yes, and that is where most of these are used. In countries with genuinely dangerous snakes the calculation is completely different.
How do I fit it?
Along the base of a wall or across a threshold, fixed with adhesive, screws or ties depending on the surface.
Does it need to be continuous?
Yes. A gap in a barrier is a route, and snakes are very good at finding one.
What defeats it?
Vegetation. A strip under long grass or leaf litter is a strip a snake passes over. Keep the run clear.
Is there something better than a barrier?
Usually, yes: remove what is attracting them. Log piles, long grass, rodent activity and standing water do more to bring snakes in than an open threshold does.
Will it keep out rodents?
No, it is not designed for that, and we would not sell it as a rodent product.
Will it deter lizards?
Possibly, and in Britain lizards are also protected. If reptiles generally are the concern, take local advice first.
Is it safe for pets?
Yes, the points are blunt. Do not fit it where a dog regularly lies or walks though.
Is it safe for children?
It is blunt, but as with anything at ground level, think about where it goes.
Can I use it on a fence?
It is designed for ground level thresholds. For fence tops, the cat and bird strips are the right products.

It addresses crossing at ground level. Some snakes climb well, so a barrier is one part of an approach rather than the whole of it.
