Looking after it
Clear leaves and nesting debris from between the pins once or twice a year. Once enough rubbish packs in, a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes, which is the usual reason a run that worked for two years suddenly stops.
About this product
Take away the ledge and the pigeons take themselves elsewhere.
Marine grade stainless steel spike strips, sold by the 50 cm with no minimum. Cut with tin snips, fix with adhesive or screws, and the perch is gone.
Pigeons are creatures of habit. They return to the same ledge, the same sill and the same parapet until something makes it not worth the trouble.
A spike strip is that something. It removes the flat landing space a pigeon needs to put down and turn around, so the bird tries once and goes somewhere easier.
These are marine grade stainless steel pins on a UV stabilised base, sold per 50 cm strip with no minimum order.
They fix with exterior adhesive, screws, nails or cable ties, and cut to length with tin snips.
Nothing here harms the bird. It is a physical barrier, and pigeons are perfectly capable of finding a different roost.

Pigeons need room. They are heavy for a perching bird, they land with a shuffle rather than a drop, and they want a flat surface wide enough to turn on. That is why a ledge, a windowsill, a parapet and the top of a shop sign are the four places you will find them, and why a spike strip works so reliably on this species in particular.

Measure the whole run before you order. Divide by 50 cm and round up, because a bare half metre at the end is exactly where the birds will regroup. On a ledge wider than about 15 cm you will want two rows, one near the front edge and one near the back, since a single row down the middle still leaves landing space either side of it.

Fitting is a clean surface and a good exterior sealant. Old droppings, moss and flaking paint are the reason a strip lifts a year later, so scrape and wash first and let it dry. Where there is something to screw into, screw into it. On a curve, work in short lengths rather than bending one long strip into shape.

There is one thing to check before you fit anything. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use. If there is an active nest on the surface, that surface waits until the nest is finished with. Outside the nesting season you are free to treat it.

Where a spike will not suit, say a sill too narrow to take a base or a decorative stone you would rather not drill or glue, the repellent gel does the same job by making the surface unpleasant underfoot rather than physically blocking it.

Got questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Do pigeon spikes actually stop pigeons?
Yes. Pigeons are one of the birds spikes work best on, because they are heavy, they need a flat surface to land and turn on, and a spiked ledge does not give them one. They try once and move to an easier spot.
Are the spikes cruel?
No. They are a physical barrier, not a trap and not an electric deterrent. The bird lands, finds nowhere to stand, and flies off. The pins are blunt enough that they do not injure it.
How many strips do I need?
Measure the full length you want to protect and divide by 50 cm, then round up. It is better to have a spare strip than a bare half metre where the birds regroup.
My ledge is wide. Is one row enough?
On anything wider than about 15 cm, use two rows, one near the front edge and one near the back. A single row down the middle still leaves landing room in front of and behind it.
What do I fix them with?
Exterior adhesive, screws, nails or cable ties. The base has a glue channel and screw holes so you can use whichever suits the surface.
Which surfaces can I fit them to?
Brick, render, stone, timber, metal, uPVC and painted surfaces. Tell us what you have and we will say what to fix with.
Can I cut them to size?
Yes, with tin snips. That is how you finish a run neatly and work around a bracket or a pipe.
Will they fit a curved parapet?
Yes. Work in short lengths around the curve rather than forcing one long strip, and the run follows the shape.
Do I need to prepare the surface?
Clean it first. Old droppings, moss and loose paint are the single most common reason a strip lifts a year later. Scrape, wash, let it dry, then fix.
How long do they last?
They are made for permanent outdoor use, and the stainless steel resists corrosion including near the coast. We do not publish a service life in years because it depends on the site.
Will they rust?
The pins are marine grade stainless steel, made to resist corrosion outdoors. The base is UV stabilised polycarbonate and cannot rust at all.
Do they need maintenance?
Very little. Clear leaves and nesting debris from between the pins once or twice a year, because once enough packs in a bird can stand on the debris instead.
Are they visible from the ground?
They are low profile and most people never notice them from street level. If the run is somewhere you would rather not see a fix at all, the polycarbonate spikes are close to invisible.
Will they stop pigeons nesting?
Yes, if they are fitted before the nest is built. Once a nest is in use it is protected in law and that surface has to wait.
There is already a nest on my ledge. What do I do?
Leave it. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use. Fit the spikes once it is finished with, and then the birds cannot rebuild there.
Is it legal to use pigeon spikes in the UK?
Yes. They are a humane, non lethal deterrent and are legal to fit. It is the active nest that the law protects, not the bird's access to your ledge.
Are they safe around my cat or dog?
Yes. The pins are blunt. They are uncomfortable to stand on, which is the point, but they do not injure a pet that investigates them.
Will they hurt the pigeons?
No. A pigeon that lands on a spiked surface finds it awkward and leaves. There is nothing sharp enough to cut and nothing that traps.
Can I use them on a windowsill?
Yes, sills are one of the commonest places they go. Check the sill is deep enough for the base to sit flat, and use two rows if it is wide.
Can I use them on a roof ridge or gutter?
Yes. Gutters and ridges are standard applications, and stopping a nest in a gutter saves a blockage later.
Can I use them on a shop sign?
Yes, and signage is one of the best cases for them, because droppings on a sign are the thing customers see.
Will they work on seagulls too?
Yes. Gulls are larger again and need even more landing room, so the same strips work well on them.
Will they work on sparrows?
Not reliably. Small birds can settle between the pins, and some can perch on them. For sparrows and similar small species, netting is the product that actually closes the space.
What is the difference between the steel and the plastic spikes?
The steel is stronger and is the usual choice on commercial and coastal work. The polycarbonate costs less and is close to invisible from the ground, which suits a period frontage or a shopfront.
Can I take them down later?
Yes, if you fit them with screws or a removable adhesive. That is worth thinking about if you are renting.
Do you fit them for me?
No, we supply only. Everything is designed to be fitted by the person buying it, and the guide on our home page covers the parts people usually ask about.
How much is delivery?
Free on orders over £75. Below that it is £22, and there is no minimum order.
Can I return them if I ordered the wrong amount?
Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and everything we sell is a standard stock item so that applies to the whole range.
Will spikes solve the problem on their own?
On the treated surface, yes. If the birds are being fed nearby they will stay in the area and simply use the next ledge, so it is worth dealing with the food source at the same time.
Who do I ask if my question is not here?
Email theteam@mybirdspikes.co.uk. Tell us the bird, the surface and roughly how long the run is, and we can usually answer in one reply.
Page summary
Anti-Pigeon Spikes sold by Bird Spikes Company at mybirdspikes.co.uk. Marine grade stainless steel spike strips on a UV stabilised polycarbonate base, sold per 50 cm strip with no minimum order and joined end to end to cover any run length. Fitted to ledges, window sills, parapets, rooftops, gutters, fences and signage to stop pigeons landing, roosting and nesting. Fixes with exterior adhesive, screws, nails or cable ties; cuts to length with tin snips; suits brick, render, stone, timber, metal and uPVC. The strips work by removing the flat landing space a pigeon needs to put down and turn around, so they are highly effective on pigeons, gulls and crows and are NOT the right product for small birds such as sparrows, which can settle between the pins and are better served by netting. Non lethal and blunt enough not to injure pets or squirrels. A ledge wider than about 15 cm usually needs two rows. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 an active nest may not be damaged, so surfaces are treated outside the nesting season. Delivery is UK wide, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 22.
