Looking after it

Clear debris from between the points once or twice a year. Plastic strips collect leaf litter the same way steel ones do.

The plastic one, for where steel would show.

Hard moulded plastic strips, UV stabilised. Cheaper than steel, far less visible from the ground, and the right call on a frontage you would rather not change the look of.

This is the plastic member of the family, and the reason to choose it is almost always how it looks rather than what it costs.

On a period frontage, a shopfront or anywhere the fix must not be part of the view, a moulded strip is far less noticeable than steel from ground level.

It is hard injection moulded plastic, UV stabilised, made to live outdoors permanently.

It does the same job as the steel on the same birds, and it is sold the same way, per 50 cm with no minimum.

Where it is not the right choice is exposure. On a coastal roof or anything a specification will be written against, buy the steel.

Pest Spikes | Pest Control Spikes | Spike Pest Control (per 50cm strip)

Choosing between the plastic and the steel is genuinely simple, and it comes down to two questions. How exposed is the site, and how much does it matter that nobody sees the fix.

Pest Spikes | Pest Control Spikes | Spike Pest Control (per 50cm strip)

On a sheltered domestic ledge where the neighbours will notice a line of steel glinting, plastic wins on both counts. On an exposed coastal parapet, or on a commercial job where somebody will specify the material, steel wins.

Everything else is the same. Same 50 cm strips, same no-minimum ordering, same fixing methods, same principle of removing the flat landing space a bird needs.

The one practical difference in fitting is cutting. Plastic cuts cleanly with snips or a sharp knife, where steel needs tin snips, so working around brackets is slightly easier.

It is the same product as our cat spikes and our snake spikes in a different presentation, which is worth saying plainly rather than letting three pages imply three products.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between these and the steel spikes?

Material and appearance. Plastic is lower profile, less visible from the ground and costs less. Steel is stronger and is the right call on exposed or coastal sites.

Which should I buy?

Ask two questions: how exposed is the site, and does it matter if the fix is visible. Sheltered and visible means plastic; exposed or specified means steel.

Are they the same as your cat spikes?

Yes, the same moulded product presented for a different job. We would rather say that than let three pages imply three products.

Will plastic last outdoors?

Yes, it is UV stabilised and injection moulded for permanent outdoor use.

Will it go brittle in frost?

It is made for normal outdoor temperature swings. In a very exposed location the steel is still the safer choice.

Will it discolour?

UV stabilised plastic holds its colour far better than untreated plastic. Over many years in full sun some change is normal.

How are they sold?

Per 50 cm strip, with no minimum order.

How many do I need?

Measure the run, divide by 50 cm and round up.

Do I need two rows?

On anything wider than about 15 cm, yes, same as the steel.

How do I cut them?

Snips or a sharp knife. Easier than steel, which needs tin snips.

What do I fix them with?

Exterior adhesive, screws, nails or cable ties.

Do I need to clean the surface first?

Yes. Droppings and moss stop adhesive keying, whichever strip you use.

Which birds do they work on?

Larger birds: pigeons, gulls, crows. The same as the steel.

Will they work on sparrows?

Not reliably. Small birds can settle between the points. Netting is the right product for them.

Are they humane?

Yes. Blunt points, a physical deterrent, nothing that traps or harms.

Are they safe for pets?

Yes.

Are they really less visible?

Noticeably so from ground level. Steel catches light; a neutral moulded strip does not.

Can I paint them?

We would not. Paint on a UV stabilised plastic tends to flake, and it can make the strip more visible rather than less.

Do they need maintenance?

Clear debris from between the points once or twice a year.

Can I use them on a gutter?

Yes, and being light they suit older plastic guttering well.

Can I use them on a fence?

Yes. For cats specifically, the cat spikes page is the same product presented for that job.

Can I use them on a sign?

Yes, and their being discreet is a real advantage on signage.

Will they work in a coastal town?

They will work, but salt and wind are exactly the conditions the steel is made for. On the coast we would suggest steel.

How long do they last?

Made for permanent outdoor use. We do not publish a figure in years because exposure varies so much.

Can I remove them later?

Yes, if fitted with screws or a removable adhesive.

Is there a nest where I want to fit them?

Then wait. Damaging a nest in use is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Do you fit them?

No, we supply only.

How much is delivery?

Free on orders over £75. Below that it is £22, and there is no minimum order.

Can I return it?

Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and everything we sell is a standard stock item so that applies to the whole range.

Who do I ask if my question is not here?

Email theteam@mybirdspikes.co.uk. Tell us the animal, the surface and roughly the size of the area, and we can usually answer in one reply.

Not sure which one you need?

Tell us the bird, the surface and roughly how long the run is, and we will tell you what suits it before you buy. Free UK delivery on orders over £75.

Page summary

Pest Spikes sold by Bird Spikes Company at mybirdspikes.co.uk. Hard injection moulded, UV stabilised plastic spike strips sold per 50 cm with no minimum order. This is the plastic alternative to the marine grade stainless strips and does the same job on the same birds by removing the flat landing space they need. The reason to choose plastic is APPEARANCE and cost: it is low profile and neutral, so it is far less visible from ground level than steel, which suits period frontages, shopfronts and domestic ledges. Choose the STEEL instead where the site is coastal or highly exposed, or where a specification calls for stainless. Cuts with snips or a sharp knife, fixed with exterior adhesive, screws, nails or cable ties. It is the same moulded product presented on this site's cat spikes and snake spikes pages. Effective on larger birds; small birds such as sparrows can settle between the points and are better served by netting. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 an active nest may not be damaged. Delivery is UK wide, free over GBP 75, otherwise GBP 22.
