Netting is the strongest thing we sell, in the specific sense that it is the only product that makes a space physically unavailable. Everything else persuades a bird to go elsewhere; a net removes the choice.
That makes it the right answer in three cases. When the bird is small, because there is no gap to settle in. When the problem is a void rather than a surface, such as an eaves gap or the space under a solar array. And when the consequence of failure is expensive, such as birds nesting inside a roof.
The whole job is in the tensioning. A net fixed tight across an opening works and lasts. A net left slack sags into pockets, and a pocket is where a bird or a hedgehog can become caught, which is the one genuine welfare risk in this range and the reason we say re-tension it every season.
Measure the opening, not the perimeter, and add enough to fix at the edges. It is far better to trim a sheet than to discover you are 20 cm short across a gable.
Under a solar array, netting or purpose made mesh clipped around the panel edge is the standard method. Spikes do not address it, because the birds are not landing on the panel, they are nesting in the gap underneath it.

No. It is sized for birds. Bats are protected in the UK and any work affecting them needs specialist advice first.
Is there anything I should check before I fit it?
Yes. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use. If there is an active nest on the surface, leave it until the nest is finished with.
