It works over an area rather than on a single ledge, which makes it a garden and balcony product rather than a building one.
Nothing about it touches the bird.
A disc covers an area loosely rather than protecting a surface exactly. That is the honest difference between it and a spike strip. If your problem is pigeons on one specific ledge, a strip solves that ledge completely and a disc does not.
Where discs earn their place is the space a strip cannot address: over a vegetable bed, in a fruit tree, along a balcony, above a patio table, around a yard.
Height and exposure matter more than quantity. One disc hung where it catches wind and sun outperforms three hung in a sheltered corner, so put them where they will actually turn.
Move them. This is true of every visual deterrent and it is the part people skip: birds habituate to anything that stays in the same place looking the same. Shifting a disc a couple of metres every few weeks resets that, and costs nothing.
For a stubborn problem, pair them. Discs and tape work on the same principle and reinforce each other, and where there is a structure involved the spikes or netting do the part that no visual deterrent can.

Less well. Birds will tolerate a lot to stay near a food source, so deal with that at the same time.
Can I combine them with spikes?
Yes, and that is usually the strongest plan: spikes on the structures, discs and tape over the open ground.
Is there anything I should check before I fit it?
Yes. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a nest while it is being built or in use. If there is an active nest on the surface, leave it until the nest is finished with.
